I’m a little late to the party with this film – it only came to my attention last night as I was scrolling through Netflix searching for something to watch.
But this film utterly surprised me. Tina Fey plays Kim Baker, an uncompromising, career-driven journalist, who doesn’t seem to be scared of anything. Yes, she expresses doubt and nerves when she’s first posted to Afghanistan as a war correspondent, but fear? Never. She doesn’t compromise on her values, her work ethic or her character, and she certainly doesn’t give up.
This film surprised me, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but I feel like this type of female protagonist is few and far between in modern films. One who doesn’t compromise, who has a comeback for everything, who’s totally in control of the situation (you’ll see what I mean with her dealings with one of the local politicians).
Even better, it’s based on a book that tells the story of a real-life Kim Baker and her experiences as a journalist in the ‘forgotten-war’.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) is on the UK Netflix right now if you want to watch it.
